The NRPA Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) computer-based exam allows two hours for 100 questions: 95 scored and five unscored. Prepare with the official content outline, its listed reference materials and practice applying the criteria. You can take the exam without a course, although NRPA encourages initial candidates to attend one.
What the CPSI exam covers
The exam tests whether you can identify hazards on public playgrounds, rank them by injury potential, and apply the standards and guidelines that govern repair, retrofit and removal.
The Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) program is run by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) under its National Certification Board. Its stated aim is an inspector who can identify hazards on public playground equipment, rank them by injury potential, and establish inspections plus a system of repair, retrofit and removal for an agency or playground owner.
NRPA is candid about the credential's limits. Passing the exam does not by itself make you a playground safety expert; NRPA describes field experience applying this knowledge as what builds that expertise over time.

Eligibility and ways to test
You must be at least 18. NRPA does not set education or experience prerequisites.
Three routes lead to the credential: a two-day in-person course with the paper-and-pencil exam on the morning of day three, a blended course with a four-hour virtual session plus the computer-based exam, or the computer-based exam on its own. This guide covers the computer-based route, which NRPA delivers through the PSI testing company.
A course is not required, but NRPA strongly encourages candidates to take one for initial certification. The online prep course costs $480 for members and $660 for nonmembers, and it does not include the exam, the course manual or the field guide.
Once you register for the computer-based exam, you have 90 days to take it. A Latin American Spanish translated exam is available on request.

The five scored domains
Use the five domains to check your coverage and give more revision time to weak areas with substantial exam weight.
The table below shows the 95 scored questions in the Candidate Handbook effective August 18, 2025. The remaining five questions are unscored test-development items. Consult the handbook for the full list of subtopics.
| Domain | Scored questions | What the outline covers |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Hazard Identification | 34 | ASTM and CPSC standards and their rationale; injury causes and patterns; identifying, ranking and prioritizing hazards; entanglement, protrusion, entrapment and crush/shear hazards with the tools and gauges that identify them; equipment-specific performance requirements |
| 2. Surfacing | 18 | Surfacing standards; impact attenuation and critical height; compliance verification such as field and laboratory testing; fall height; material selection; maintenance requirements |
| 3. Playground Environment | 17 | Child development and age-appropriateness; site evaluation including shade and drainage; design, layout and signage; accessibility; use zones; recalls and alerts |
| 4. Audit, Inspection, and Maintenance | 15 | Audit and inspection forms; factors affecting inspection frequency; evaluating equipment not listed in the standards; corrective action and maintenance; taking equipment out of service |
| 5. Risk Management | 11 | Record keeping; site history files; manufacturer and installer compliance documents; injury reporting and accident investigation; standard of care; the CPSI Code of Professional Conduct |

Reference materials to study
The exam draws on a defined reference list: the CPSC handbook, four ASTM standards, a field practice book, the federal accessibility guidelines and the CPSI Code of Professional Conduct.
The handbook also contains a CPSI Table of Dimensions, and that table is provided during the exam alongside the questions. Knowing when a dimension applies matters more than memorizing its values.
- CPSC Handbook for Public Playground Safety — free download. The handbook tells candidates to read every page and to understand rather than memorize Tables One and Two, with priority attention to surfacing materials, use zones, equipment not recommended for public playgrounds or for preschool-age children, equipment-specific recommendations, and guardrails and barriers.
- ASTM F1487-21, Standard Consumer Safety Performance Specification for Playground Equipment for Public Use — read every page and become very familiar with it; purchase from ASTM.
- ASTM F1292-18e1, F2223-19a and F3313-20 — the surfacing standards covering impact attenuation, surfacing guidance and field testing; purchase from ASTM.
- Playground Safety Is No Accident, 6th edition — purchased from the International Playground Safety Institute.
- Accessibility Guidelines for Play Areas — free download.
- CPSI Code of Professional Conduct — included in the handbook and tested within the Risk Management domain.

How to prepare, in order
Read the two core documents in full, organize notes by the five domains, then practice converting each criterion into the measurement and decision it requires.
Start with the CPSC handbook and ASTM F1487: the candidate handbook recommends reading both in full. Organize your notes under the five domains, then mark the topics you can explain and those you need to revisit.
As a study exercise, take a criterion from the listed reference and note its scope, the information needed to apply it, and the evidence you would need to record. Check the relevant conditions and exceptions before drawing a conclusion. This is preparation advice, not an official scoring method.
Practice writing findings that identify the condition and cite the applicable criterion. The Code requires documenting non-compliances, prioritizing their foreseeable consequences and promptly advising the employer or client of seriously dangerous conditions. A short study template does not establish that a complete inspection report meets every requirement.

Practice exercise: the Code of Professional Conduct
Check the owner’s consent, the completeness of the findings and permission to share the report.
This original scenario practices the CPSI Code of Professional Conduct, which appears in the Risk Management domain. It is not a question from the certification exam.
Practice exercise
Original practice scenario. The owner of a licensed child-care center has asked you to inspect its playground. Which actions conflict with the CPSI Code of Professional Conduct? (1) Before the visit, you obtain the owner’s consent to the inspection and confirm its scope. (2) You agree to the owner’s request to omit a minor non-compliance from the report. (3) You send the report to a regional supervisor even though the owner has not authorized that disclosure. (4) You prioritize the identified non-compliances according to foreseeable consequences.
Reveal answer
Actions 2 and 3 conflict with the Code. Actions 1 and 4 follow the stated duties.
The Code requires documenting all non-compliances with a citation to the applicable criterion and omitting no adverse findings from the official inspection record. An owner’s request does not remove that duty. It also requires the owner’s authorization before findings are shared with anyone else. Obtaining consent before the inspection and prioritizing foreseeable consequences follow the Code. These conclusions address only the four actions stated in the scenario.

Scheduling and test-day rules
Book your PSI appointment within the eligibility window, then check your confirmation and identification before travelling.
Use the PSI scheduling service linked by NRPA to find an available center and appointment. Check the live listing for your location.
You may reschedule once at no charge, but only by calling PSI at least one full business day before your appointment. Missing that deadline, not showing up, or failing the exam forfeits your fees, and a retake requires a new application.
- Arrive by your scheduled time: candidates more than 15 minutes late are not admitted.
- Bring one valid government-issued ID with photo and signature — driver's license, state ID, passport or military ID — with a name matching the information on your NRPA application. Employment, student and temporary IDs are not accepted.
- Only wallets and keys come into the center, stored in a locked soft locker. Phones, watches, hats and personal items that will not fit the locker mean you cannot test.
- Pencils are provided, and you receive one piece of scratch paper at a time, which you must return to the proctor to get your score report.
- You can bookmark questions and return to them, and you should answer every question — there is no penalty for guessing.
- Breaks are allowed but cost you exam time, and no content questions may be asked during the exam.

Results, retakes and recertification
Results appear on screen, the credential lasts three years, and current renewals can use the exam or a CEU application.
Your result appears on screen when you finish, and an official score report follows by email as a PDF. Successful candidates enter the NRPA CPSI registry within six to eight weeks.
The handbook does not publish a numeric passing score. NRPA sets the standard through a criterion-referenced process using expert judgment on each item. If you do not pass, you reapply and retake the exam at a PSI center under the same procedures. Appeals must reach the certification committee within 60 days of your exam date.
The handbook describes a three-year certification term, with the expiration date on the first day of the month following the three-year anniversary of passing. For certifications expiring July 1, 2026 or later, renewal can be through the CPSI exam or a completed continuing education unit (CEU) recertification application. Check the current renewal application for its conditions. Documented extension requests are available for military deployment or serious health conditions.
